Africa-Press – Botswana. Police in Tutume are holding in custody a 39 year old driver of a Honda Fit vehicle who on Sunday evening at about seven, hit and killed a 76 year old man of Ndzonga ward in Nkange and took off from the scene.

The old man was riding a bicycle. Tutume Police Station Traffic Officer Assistant Superintendent Amos Kurusa said yesterday they were notified by other road users who passed at scene that the old man was hit by a car and the driver had run away leaving his vehicle behind. Assistant Superintendent Kurusa added that the police rushed to the scene where they indeed found the old man who was rushed to Tutume primary hospital where he was certified dead.

He said the old man was riding on the left side which was the proper side he was supposed to be and he was hit from behind by the vehicle.

The police, assisted by members of the public were able to arrest the driver at the nearby village of Changate on the same night.

He said the driver is being held in custody while investigation were ongoing. He appealed to the public particularly in Nkange constituency where the bicycle transport is the popular mode of transport to ensure that they installed reflectors on their bicycles for vsisibility at night. Meanwhile, he said in another incident in Makuta still under Tutume Police jurisdiction, other road users notified the police about the death of a 19-year old man who died on the spot after falling off a vehicle in which he had asked for a lift from Nshakashogwe to Makuta. Mr Kurusa r said investigation were ongoing and appealed to the public to come forward with information that could lead to the identification of the vehicle, which some eye witnesses said was a Toyota Dyna.
