TWENTY BGCSE CANDIDATES RESULTS OUTSTANDING

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2023 Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results, with 20 of the 36 509 pupils who sat for the examinations candidates achieving an outstanding performance.

The top candidate has achieved 10A* and 1B compared to 9A*, 1A and 1B of the 2022 top candidate.

Giving an analysis of the results during a media briefing on Friday, the Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe said for candidates from government centres, 22.15 per cent were awarded 6 C’s of better (36 points and above) an improvement of 0.78 per cent in comparison to the 21.37 per cent registered in 2022.

Dr Letsholathebe explained that for a candidate ‘s performance to be declared outstanding, the candidate should have achieved at least 6 A*s.

“The result show that generally, for the four years there has been gradual improvement across credit grades,” he said, adding “for government centre candidates, performance in 2023 has general remained more or less the same across grades compared to 2022”.

He said a gradual of improvement at 6 C’s or better has been observed since 2019, indicating an improvement in performance.

Dr Letsholathebe said the proportion of candidates achieving 6 E’s or better was 62.28 per cent compared to 62.59 per cent in 2022. He added that the proportion of candidates achieving 6 G’s or better was 95.07 per cent compared to 95.45 per cent in 2022.

“The proportion of grades A or better is 3.67 per cent, compared to 3.11 per cent in 2022, indicating an improvement of 0.46 per cent,” said Dr Letsholathebe.

He said the 2023 cohort comprised candidates from public schools private schools and individual candidates who were registered directly under BEC.

“Overall performance for government schools, private schools and individual candidates indicates that among all the grades awarded this year, 95.80 per cent were grade G or better compared to 95.90 in 2022,” he said.

Dr Letsholathebe said the proportion of grades E or better was 75 per cent compared to 74.41 per cent in 2022, showing an improvement of 0.59 per cent.

He said the proportion of grades C or better was at 32.30 per cent compared to 31.17 per cent in 2022 indicating and improvement of 1.13 percent.
