Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) results, which Botswana Examination Council released Friday have registered a total of 20 candidates with outstanding performance.

The top candidate for the 2023 BGCSE results has achieved 10A* and 1B compared to 9A*, 1A and 1B in 2022.

Giving an analysis of the results during a media briefing last Friday, Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe said a total of 36 509 students sat for the examinations.

Dr Letsholathebe said for candidates from government centres, 22.15 per cent were awarded 6Cs or better (36 points and above) an improvement of 0.78 per cent compared to 21.37 per cent in 2022.

There are also 20 outstanding candidates compared to 14 in 2022.

Dr Letsholathebe explained that the criterion for outstanding performance was for candidates who had achieved at least 6A*s.

“The result show that generally, for the four years there has been gradual improvement across credit grades. For government centre candidates, performance in 2023 has generally remained more or less the same across grades compared to 2022,” he said.

He added that gradual of improvement at 6Cs or better had been observed since 2019, indicating an improvement in the quality of performance.

Dr Letsholathebe said the proportion of candidates achieving 6Es or better was 62.28 per cent compared to 62.59 per cent in 2022.

He added that candidates who had achieved 6Gs or better was 95.07 per cent compared to 95.45 per cent in 2022.

“The proportion of grades A or better is 3.67 per cent, compared to 3.11 per cent in 2022, indicating an improvement of 0.46 per cent,” he added.

He said the 2023 cohort comprised candidates from public and private schools as well as individual candidates who were registered directly under BEC.

He said the proportion of grade E or better was 75 per cent compared to 74.41 per cent in 2022, showing an improvement of 0.59 per cent.

He said the proportion of grade C or better was 32.30 per cent compared to 31.17 per cent, indicating an improvement of 1.13 per cent.

“Overall performance for government schools, private schools and individual candidates indicates that among all the grades awarded this year, 95.8 per cent were grade G or better compared to 95.9 in 2022,” he said.
