Africa-Press – Botswana. The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, called on Sunday for urgent debate on the Government of Haiti’s request for the deployment of an international force to respond to the humanitarian crisis in the country.
“The secretary-general remains seriously concerned about the situation in Haiti, which is facing an outbreak of cholera in the midst of a dramatic deterioration in the security situation that has paralyzed the country,” said Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.
António Guterres urged the international community, including members of the Security Council, to consider as soon as possible the request by the Haitian authorities for the “immediate deployment of a specialized international armed force to respond to the humanitarian crisis”.
This force can be in charge, among other missions, of “ensuring the free movement of water, fuel, food and medical products from the main ports and airports to communities and health units”, explained the spokesman, adding that Guterres sent today a letter to the Security Council “with options for greater security support to Haiti”.
