Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko’s state visit to Estonia starting May 19 to 22 is expected to strengthen ties, mutual trust and understanding between Botswana and Estonia.

This is President Boko’s maiden state visit since taking oath of office and it demonstrates Botswana’s top priority to meaningfully participate in global affairs, consolidate and nurture friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with other nations.

With government fully committed to digital transformation, an area in which Estonia has experience and expertise in, it is expected that the host will share its success and lessons learned for an inclusive digital transformation, as well as support reforms in the public sector, the business environment and the education system.

While in Estonia, President Boko will among other things engage in official talks with his Estonian counterpart, Mr Alar Karis, an opportunity for the two countries to review progress made following agreed outcomes of the State Visit undertaken by the by the latter to Botswana in March 2024.

A press release from the Office of the President says the leaders will also discuss areas of bilateral relations that exist between the two countries, notably in the fields of digital transformation and innovation and capacity building, trade and investment as well as other areas of mutual interests.

President Boko will also give a keynote address at the Latitude59 Business Conference, a key calendar event regarded as Estonia’s largest annual startup and technology conference.

“The event is anticipated to bring together global technology bloggers and enthusiasts, investors, entrepreneurs, media, academia, fund associates, accelerators and incubators to discuss the largest trends and innovation in the technology industry,” says the release.

Furthermore, the press release says President Boko and his counterpart will officially open the Botswana-Estonia Business forum, an event hosted by the Government of Estonia, aimed at promoting trade and investment between the two countries.

Botswana and Estonia established relations in 2008, which were followed by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Phandu Skelemani’s 2009 visit to Estonia that also brought about the establishment of a visa-free travel for Estonian citizens to Botswana.

Interestingly, the two countries’s flags bear the same colours of blue, black and white. Meanwhile, President Boko is accompanied by Minister for International Affairs, Dr Phenyo Butale, Minister of Communications and Innovation, Mr David Tshere, Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Mr Tiroeaone Ntsima, senior government officials and representatives from the Botswana Investment and Trade Center. The President and his delegation are expected back home on May 22.
