Africa-Press – Botswana. This weekend promises to be a busy one for sports enthusiasts as there will be mouthwatering activities in different sporting codes throughout the country.
In Orapa, the Botswana Netball Association (BONA) will conclude the U21 Youth Development League where nine teams, being UB Crystals, Police, Notwane, BDF Cats, TAFIC, Maun Heroes, Uprising Stars, Thunder Bolts and Centre of School Excellence (CSE) will be competing.
BONA marketing and public relations officer, Stanley Modibedi said the league underscores BONA’s commitment to identify and nurture talent, adding it was also a platform to showcase youthful talent as well as talent scouting for the upcoming Region 5 Games.
In football, the FNB Premiership continues this weekend featuring a top of the table clash between Mochudi Centre Chiefs and TAFIC at the National Stadium on Saturday evening.
In a north versus south game, the two teams have each played six games separated by one point with Magosi at the summit of the log with 16 points while Matjimenyenga has 15 points.
In the first division league, the Debswana First Division South league features an encounter between Desert Nxau and Police XI at Tsabong VDC grounds on Saturday, while on Sunday, Prisons XI will face log leaders, Taung Young Strikers at SSG grounds in Gaborone.
As for Debswana First Division North league, Santa Green FC and Tshikinyega Tigers FC will battle for three points at Pekenene Junior Secondary School (JSS) grounds in Mahalapye, while Makungulupeswa FC will host Peacemakers at Shangano JSS grounds.
In athletics, Werda Athletics Club will on Saturday host Tsabong Kids athletics and talent search programme at Desert Nxau grounds in Tsabong.
The event will feature among others 60m, 100m and 800m races.
Meanwhile, the men’s national cricket team, Baggy Blues have secured a spot in the Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers Africa Finals.
The Baggy Blues made it to the finals after registering three consecutive victories against Eswatini, St Helena and Ivory Coast at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Abuja, Nigeria.
On the chess side, the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) hosts the BotAsh Open Chess Championships at Sowa Primary School from today concluding on Sunday. The tournament will feature the open, women categories among others.
The BCF has also announced that one of the national team players, Thuto Mpene has been awarded a two year scholarship to do IGCSE (Form 4 and 5) at CRACKIT. CRACTIT will further sponsor him to participate in local and international chess competitions. He recently completed his JCE at Moselewapula Junior Secondary Schools and awaiting results.
In the CAF Confederations Cup, Orapa United has suffered a heavy defeat in their first group stage match in Group C losing 6-0 to USM Algiers of Algeria at Stade 5 Juillet 1962 Stadium of Wednesday night.
In other Group C match ASEC Mimosas defeated FC Jaraaf 2-0.
In their next CAF confederations group stage encounters, Orapa United will host Asec Mimosas on December 8 and FC Jaraaf on December 15.
