WHO considers lead exposure harmful to children's brain development

Africa-Press – Botswana. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers lead as one of the 10 main toxics to fight for public health, as such the UN agency is concerned with solving this problem that is very dangerous “for the child’s brain development, and can lead to reduced intelligence quotient, attention, learning ability and some behavioral problems”.

Lead can cause chronic problems such as anemia, hypertension, damage to reproductive organs and irreversible neurological problems, underlined the UN agency, in a statement released last Monday.

The same source states that the WHO recommends identifying the sources of contamination by the metal as soon as possible, especially in cases where levels of lead in the blood are considered dangerous (above five micrograms per deciliter).

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), 800 million children, one third of the world’s total, have levels above risk, recalls the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Exposure to lead is very dangerous for children’s brain development, and can lead to reduced intelligence quotient, attention, learning ability and some behavioral problems,” said the director of the Department of Public Health and the Environment. from WHO, Maria Neira.
