Africa-Press – Botswana. Young Epilepsy Botswana (YEB) marked a decade of its annual Purple Walk, continuing its mission to educate the public and promote acceptance of individuals living with epilepsy.

In an interview, YEB co-founder and brand ambassador Ms Ithabeleng Nshakazhogwe emphasised commitment of the organisation to supporting those affected by epilepsy.

“We aim to assist families and caregivers by providing basic first aid training and raising awareness,” she said.

Diagnosed with epilepsy at just 13 years old, she hopes to show others that the condition can be managed with the right support.

Executive Head of Corporate Affairs at Debswana, Ms Rachel Mothibatsela commended YEB’s efforts, highlighting that while there was no cure for epilepsy, 90% of cases could be effectively managed through proper medication.

“To support this noble initiative, Debswana pledges P30,000 towards YEB’s awareness campaigns,” she announced.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people worldwide with nearly 80 per cent living in low and middle income countries such as Botswana.

Proper diagnosis and treatment could enable up to 70 per cent of those affected to live seizure-free.
