Africa-Press – Cape verde. This weekend, women, mothers and heads of households from the municipality of Santa Catarina de Santiago received kits with equipment and raw materials to start small businesses in various areas.

The initiative included nine (9) mothers from various locations in the municipality to which the respective kits were delivered on the afternoon of Friday, 9th, in a ceremony that took place at Espaço Jovem de Ribeira da Barca, one of the locations on the coast of the municipality of Santa Catarina, interior of Santiago.

Working to protect children

According to the municipality of Santa Catarina, this project called “Mães” aims to work on preventing and combating child sexual abuse and exploitation, budgeted at around 738 million Cape Verdean escudos.

This amount allocated to the municipality of Santa Catarina was mobilized by the Association of Disadvantaged Children (ACRIDES), through a partnership with ECPAT Lux, a Luxembourgish NGO financed by the Government of Luxembourg.

Suzana, one of the beneficiaries, appreciates the support

Suzana, one of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of the others, could not hide the group’s satisfaction at the time of delivery. “We are very grateful to the institutions involved, because we are women who struggle a lot”, she said.

“Me, for example – he added, my profession is to do everything, but my dream has always been to make cakes, donuts, fresh baked goods, and, from today onwards, I will dedicate myself to what I like to do”.

The equipment and raw materials delivered cover the areas of pastry and confectionery, grocery, kiosk, aesthetics and beauty.

The kits delivery ceremony aimed at empowering these women heads of household was attended by the mentors of this initiative and partners, among them, the President of ACRIDES and Coordinator of the National Network for the Protection of Children, Lourença Tavares and the mayor Jassira Monteiro.
