Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Union of General Industry, Food, Civil Construction and Services (SIACSA) suspended the firefighters’ strike scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, 29th, after reaching an agreement with the Municipality of São Vicente to resolve pending issues from January from 2023.
Heidi Ganeto, representative of SIACSA in São Vicente, quoted by Inforpress, explains that they reached an agreement with the mayor of São Vicente, Augusto Neves.
According to this agreement, municipal firefighters will start to enjoy their days off, starting in January of next year. On the other hand, the municipality will resolve the issue of career promotions, in addition to hiring more staff for this corporation throughout 2023.
“The first concerns days off, firefighters work without days off, so it was agreed that in January 2023 firefighters will start receiving days off. We also have the situation of promotions and hiring more staff and the council agreed to resolve these issues during the year 2023”, listed Heidi Ganeto.
Sanitation workers cancel demonstration for fear of reprisals
The head of SIACSA also advanced that he had also scheduled a demonstration by staff in the sanitation sector because of the lack of equipment and working conditions, but that it was suspended. Heidi assures that the demonstration did not take place because “there was no adhesion for fear of reprisals”.
The person in charge claims that the poor adherence has behind “the culture of fear” and says that “sometimes” they are threatened that they can be fired and end up backing down.
“We saw that we had an insufficient number of people for the demonstration and we ended up suspending the demonstration, but we have an opening from the City Council to sit down in January to discuss the situation of sanitation personnel”, clarified that union official.
