Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic (PR), José Maria Neves, said this Thursday, in Assomada, that there is still a “great disparity” in the realization of the rights to inclusion and in the defense of people’s rights with some kind of disability.
The statement was made at the opening of the seminar held under the theme: “Inclusion in Network (s) – Perspectives between Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde”, which takes place on the Campus of the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) in Cruz Grande, in the Municipality of Santa Catarina de Santiago.
“In this fight, since the times when people with disabilities in general were practically hidden or ostracized, a long way has already been covered, and today they have gained more visibility and their rights are already being defended. Even so, there is a great disparity in the realization of these rights”, he warned.
For this reason, he argued that the problem of disability is a major challenge for Cape Verdean society, “especially for families”, noting that data from the 2021 Population Census indicate that around 47,000 Cape Verdeans live with some type of disability.
