Africa-Press – Cape verde. In 2022, the hotel industry registered more than 835 thousand guests, corresponding to a sharp increase of 394.4% compared to 2021, INE advanced today. Last year, the country even managed to exceed the figures for 2019, the year before the pandemic, in which Cape Verde had reached almost 820,000 tourists. In 2022, the United Kingdom once again dominated the outbound market and the island of Sal had more than half of the demand.

INE data, relating to the movement of guests in the country, in 2022, show that the Cape Verdean hotel industry registered more than 835 thousand guests, corresponding to a sharp increase of 394.4% compared to 2021 and surpassing the approximately almost 820 thousand tourists received in 2019, the year before the pandemic contingency that affected the sector worldwide.

The numbers show that in all quarters of 2022, there were increases in guests and overnight stays, compared to the previous year. The highest reception took place in the fourth quarter (October to December), with 284,611 guests, and the behavior was no different in terms of overnight stays. The highest value was recorded in the same quarter, with 1,328,434 overnight stays.

Hotels dominate demand

The analysis by type of establishment also reveals that hotels continue to be the most sought after accommodation, representing 94.0% of total entries. Residential, guesthouses and apartment hotels follow, with approximately 2.6%, 1.6% and 1.0% of

entries, respectively.

With regard to overnight stays, hotels also dominate, representing 97.0% of the total, residences 1.2%, pensions 0.9%, and apartment hotels 0.6%.

Sal, the most popular

The report also shows that the island of Sal continued to dominate demand, with 61.8% of total entries, followed by Boa Vista, with 21.0% and Santiago, with 9.3%.

Regarding overnight stays, Sal also leads with 57.8%, Boa Vista 34.8% and Santiago 3.5%. The remaining islands accounted for only 1.8% of overnight stays in 2022.

With regard to the main outbound tourist market, in 2022, tourists from the United Kingdom dominated with 30.9% of total arrivals

, followed by those from Germany with 11.5%, the Netherlands with 10.5%, Portugal with 10.5% and France with 5.6%.

With regard to overnight stays vis-à-vis the outbound market, the United Kingdom leads, once again, with 35.3% of the total, followed by Germany, with 12.6% and the Netherlands, with 10.5%.
