Africa-Press – Cape verde. General practitioner Nuno Semedo has been appointed—on a temporary assignment basis—to serve as the Health Delegate for Porto Novo, on the island of Santo Antão, Inforpress learned today.

Nuno Semedo, who succeeds Dr. Carlos Dias in the role, is a permanent staff member of the Ministry of Health’s Directorate-General for Planning, Budget, and Management; effective immediately, he assumes the duties of Health Delegate for the municipality of Porto Novo.

The appointment of a new health delegate comes at a time when residents of Porto Novo have been complaining about a lack of medical coverage in rural communities, as well as operational issues at the health center in the city of Porto Novo—a facility inaugurated over two decades ago.

Residents have consistently emphasized the need for the government to consider constructing a hospital in the municipality of Porto Novo, arguing that the current health center—inaugurated in 2002—”no longer meets the needs” of the municipality, which is home to over 16,000 inhabitants.

The Ministry of Health has explained that Porto Novo—the largest municipality on the island of Santo Antão—possesses “a network of health services considered adequate,” comprising two health centers, six health posts, and nine basic health units, in addition to several private clinics.
