Africa-Press – Cape verde. The vice-president of UCID, Aldirley Gomes, criticized today, in Sal, the situation of “increasing precariousness” faced by hotel workers, while the government announces “vigorously” the resumption of tourism and new investments.
The local leader of the Independent and Democratic Cabo Verdean Union (UCID) made these criticisms during a press conference called to address job insecurity on the island, with a focus on the tourism sector, as the celebrations of Workers’ Day approach, marked on May 1st.
“With so much abundance announced, the situation of increasing precariousness faced by hotel workers stands out. Precarious contracts and salaries, always delayed, non-payment of Social Security contributions, high frequency of moral and sexual harassment,” he explained.
“Retaliation against workers en masse, while on the other hand, we witness the complete omission of government institutions,” he added, emphasizing that workers are the foundation that sustains “this entire system of multimillion-dollar profits.”
