Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government has signed program contracts with the nine municipal councils of Santiago, plus Tarrafal de São Nicolau, totaling 62 thousand escudos, for the implementation of public policies.
The objective, as stated by the Government in a press release, is also to delegate various competencies that were previously exercised at the central level to the local authorities, as they are closer to the citizens and in a better position to understand the problems faced by the population in their territory.
On the occasion, after the signing of the program contracts, the Minister of Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, explained that this is a strategic decision to municipalize social services through the involvement of municipalities.
“Because it is the power that is closest and there will be more effectiveness and efficiency in the use of resources,” justified the minister, ensuring that the agreed upon program of municipalization is being “fully implemented” in the part of integrated support to families, guaranteeing access to pre-school and inclusion of people with special needs.
