Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão Municipality Day: Residents “should feel satisfied”, says mayor Orlando Delgado

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Mayor of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão considers that the residents of Ribeira Grande “should feel satisfied” with the path taken by the municipality. Orlando Delgado points out the fact that Ribeira Grande is “far above” the national average in terms of quality of life for its population .

“The territorial cohesion index that actually measures the quality of life of a given territory, places the municipality of Ribeira Grande in fifth place, among the 22 municipalities of Cape Verde”, said mayor Orlando Delgado during the solemn commemorative session of the Ribeira Grande Municipality Day, celebrated, this year, for the first time, on a new date, the 7th of May, which marks the creation, in 1732, of the municipality of Santo Antão

Weaknesses: accessibility and social housing

Orlando Delgado was also keen to point out that, despite the success of the work carried out by the municipality and the central government, the Municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão still faces some weaknesses, namely in terms of accessibility and social housing.

The mayor of Ribeira Grande says, however, that there is a feeling of “hope and confidence” regarding the challenges of the future.

“As you can see here, the diagnosis is well done and all benches without exception brought projections of what we all want for our municipality”, he said, referring to the interventions made by the various forces with seats in the Municipal Assembly of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão at the solemn commemorative session of the Municipality Day held on Sunday, 7th, in the city of Ponta do Sol.

Congratulations from the President of the Republic

The President of the Republic also welcomed, yesterday, Sunday, the Day of the Municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão, taking the opportunity to highlight “the enormous” potential of the municipality in the sectors of agriculture, agro-industry, fishing, and, above all, tourism.

In a missive addressed to the local mayor, Orlando Delgado, the head of state considers that, despite the constraints and challenges, “the ribeiragrandeses have reason to celebrate”, justifying that the opening of the university center of the Instituto das Ciências Agrárias de Santo Antão, which is part of the Technical University of the Atlantic (UTA) and which has a campus in the agricultural center of Afonso Martinho, may be “capable of promoting a more modern and more sustainable agriculture”.

José Maria Neves, did not fail to point out, recognized some constraints that Ribeira Grande and Santo Antão face, namely the precariousness in terms of maritime transport that, as he said, “has hindered the movement of people and the flow of products, unemployment, precarious contracts, reduction of purchasing power, poverty and loss of population”.

Remember that the Municipality Day of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão was being celebrated on the 17th of January. However, in November last year, the local Municipal Assembly approved the new date for the celebration of the event, May 7, which marks the creation, in 1732, of the municipality of Santo Antão with its seat in the village of Santa Cruz which, in occasion, it was elevated to the category of village, with the name of Vila da Ribeira Grande.
