Africa-Press – Cape verde. The doctor at Agostinho Neto Hospital, Georgina Chantre, denounced, this Thursday, 11th, to A NAÇÃO online, an aggression by a user at her workplace. The case dates back to Wednesday, 10, around noon. The appeal is for the reinforcement of security at the Emergency Bank, taking into account that it ensures that this is not the first time that health professionals face these risks. The individual was arrested.
As Georgina Chantre explains, the aggressor is an individual who accompanied a patient who was admitted to the hospital with a chronic ulcer, with signs of abuse and lack of care.
“The individual who accompanied him approached me very aggressively, already giving orders that he had brought the patient to be hospitalized and taken care of, saying that he did not have time to take care of him”, said the doctor.
Usual procedures
This health professional also reveals that despite the way she was treated, she followed all the normal procedures.
“I passed the exams and when the results became available I called the surgeon and he recommended an orthopedist because this patient’s knees and thigh were in terrible condition. As the patient was being transferred from the stretcher to a wheelchair, given his situation which was not good, he expressed some discomfort”, he continued.
And by all indications, it was at this moment that the user (apparently the patient’s son) began to “assault” and threaten the health professional.
Situation “sad, shameful and humiliating”
“He was very aggressive and even told me that if the patient died he would kill me. He started insulting me and saying a lot of bad words. When he was going to proceed to physical aggression, he was stopped by the doorman ”, advanced the doctor who describes the scenario as “sad, shameful and humiliating ”.
At the time, as he said, he was unable to react because “I did not expect that attitude, especially knowing everyone here the way I usually treat patients”.
“I started working here before the pandemic, about 4 years ago, and I never discriminated against or treated people badly. I don’t treat people by status or social class. Therefore, I did not expect this attitude from this gentleman or any other user”, he vented.
Complaint lodged and individual arrested
Outraged by the situation, Georgina says that the National Police were called and that she had to go “together with the aggressor” to the police station where she went to file a complaint.
“He was arrested and I was treated very well by the authorities because it was my right. I couldn’t let this go unnoticed. I was very humiliated in my workplace and for no reason at all ”, she advanced, noting that this is not the first time she has seen aggressiveness in users.
“Many people arrive here with two stones in their hands even before they are seen. They are ready to attack anything with words, with attitudes, ”she laments.
Aggressive and angry population (on social networks)
For Georgina, part of this scenario of aggressiveness and “revolt of the population” towards health units and professionals in the area, comes from the “bad image” created, especially on social networks.
“Nowadays, everything is exposed on social networks and people simply do not question whether such published situations are true or not…if everything really happened as it is told. And the blame always lies with the hospital, with health professionals…”, he laments.
“We are also human…”
“This gentleman, for example, came here to give orders on how I should do my job. This is a lack of respect that should not be committed in the hospital or any other workplace”, he stresses.
“In addition to health professionals, we are human, we have families and we have a life outside the hospital. No one gives us an opportunity to get to know us better and they already connote us as insensitive among other things ”, she laments.
In her case, she underlines that the patients who have already been through her, either at the central hospital in Praia, or in the health centers in Praia, in the interior of Santiago or at the hospital in São Vicente, “know of the doctor that I am…of the dignity how I deal with them”.
Reinforce security at Hospital da Praia
So that this situation “never happens again” Georgina Chantre says that it is necessary to strengthen security at the HAN Emergency Bank as there are, every day, more risks of vulnerability.
Even because, according to him, certain situations faced are demotivating and put the physical integrity of these professionals at risk.
“We have authorities present here but most of the time they are women and we all know that they are not respected in the same way, especially by men. Therefore, we feel vulnerable considering that we deal with all types of people on a daily basis, without exception ”, she ends.
The individual was arrested and the case follows the procedures with the competent authorities. The patient, on the other hand, was hospitalized for health care at the HAN and even apologized to the doctor Georgina Chantre for the behavior of his companion.
