Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde takes 20 athletes, all from athletics and 3×3 basketball, to the 25th Edition of the Islands Games, which starts this Tuesday, 23rd, in Corsica, France and runs until 28th May. In total, the delegation is made up of 26 elements .
Our country’s participation in this event boils down, according to the IDJ, to two modalities, athletics and 3×3 basketball, male and female, both present in the first edition of the School Sports Olympics.
It should be noted that the said competition admits individuals in the sub-16 age group, adjusting exactly with the ODE – Praia ’23, where there were sports competitions at a national level, contemplating the regional and/or inter-class phases on certain
islands and/or municipality, which motivated the connection of the winners of the aforementioned sporting event with the XXV edition of the Ilhas Games.
As already mentioned, the delegation, headed by the Director of Infrastructure of the Institute of Sports and Youth, the institution responsible for Cape Verde’s participation, is made up of 26 members, 20 athletes (10 female and 10 male), 1 head of delegation, 1 deputy chef, 3 trainers and 1 physiotherapist.
In addition to Cape Verde, athletes from countries such as Corsica, Guyana, Martinique, Malta, Sardinia, São Martinho (Caribbean) and Ischia (Italy) are expected to be represented.
History of the Island Games
It should be recalled that the 1st edition of the Games on the Islands took place in 1997. Since then, they have been held annually, under the aegis of the Comité d’ Organization de Jeux des Iles (COJI), in which young people from various European islands or with strong links to this continent.
The main objective of the Islands Games is to create a spirit of European citizenship, in the context of the Olympic ideal, which allows passing on to youth, through Sport, a sports message based on “fair play” and respect for others.
It also aims to make it possible for young people from different origins to meet, but who have insularity as a common denominator.
