São Vicente: Apesc pleased with suspension of mackerel and jack mackerel closure but advocates ‘more comprehensive look’ at fisheries sector.

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Fishing Ship-owners Association said today that he was pleased with the suspension of the closed season for mackerel, horse mackerel and melva, but said that a “more comprehensive” look was needed for the development of fisheries.

To Inforpress, João de Deus said that the suspension of the closed period was a request from the Association of Fishing Shipowners (Apesc) and it is a “good measure” taking into account that the “brutal increase” in the price of fuel, caused by the impacts of the war in Ukraine, has been “very complicated” for shipowners.

“Once again we asked for the suspension of the closed season for these species and they responded. The entire fishing sector, shipowners and all classes that make a living from extractive activity are satisfied with this measure because the fishing situation is not easy, every day we see fewer shoals entering the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Cabo Verde and we need to of having this type of incentives”, defended João de Deus”

But, recalled the same source, it cannot continue with the Government only suspending the mackerel, melava and horse mackerel defenses. For João de Deus it is time to look at the fisheries sector in a different perspective.
