Santo Antão: School vegetable gardens installed by the agro-forestry system project reinforce the students’ diet

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The school gardens built in Santo Antão as part of the project on the island’s agro-forestry system are contributing to strengthening the diet in schools, said the project’s management today.

As part of the project, school gardens were installed in schools in the Planalto Leste, which have been producing vegetables to reinforce the students’ diet, according to a note for this project, adding that in these spaces vegetables, fruit trees and endemic plants have been harvested.

“Thanks to the use of agro-ecological techniques, the school gardens are bearing fruit. The pupils are already harvesting cabbages, coriander, parsley, green onions, among others – essential for the reinforcement of their meals. These are 10 per cent healthy foods, without the use of chemicals or fertilizers”, explains the same source.

The project on agro-forestry systems was an initiative of the Association for the Defense of the Heritage of Mértola, with the Association of Women of the East Plateau as one of its partners.
