Sal Island: Immigrants train in “Basic Cooking and Pastry” course

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Fifteen immigrants received their certificates in Basic Cooking and Pastry on Monday, on the island of Sal, following the course taught by the Cape Verde Hotel and Tourism School (EHTCV) in Sal.

The delivery of the certificates, as part of the celebrations of International Migrants Day, was carried out by the Local Immigration Unit (ULI) and the Sal City Council.

The training, which is part of the Coop4Int Project – Strengthening Migrant Integration through cooperation between Portugal and Cape Verde, is implemented by the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum, IP (AIMA), the High Authority for Immigration (AAI), the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), and the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), with financial support from the European Union.

AAI’s Local technician, Nademira Silva, told the press that ULI, together with the Municipal Council of Sal, “has been developing a range of activities to celebrate immigrants’ day over the past few days, focused on raising awareness about the rights and duties of immigrants”.

“The training lasted 85 hours and essentially aims to equip these immigrants with knowledge about basic cooking and pastry. This action that concluded today aims to raise the qualifications of these graduates as a way of also promoting their integration and insertion into the job market”, he explained.

Asked to talk about the integration of the Sal community, Nademira Silva stated that the “integration rate, resulting from the first survey carried out among immigrants on the island, shows that 84% feel well or very well integrated”, she concluded.

The trainees “were satisfied” with the training and said they hoped that the Local Unit “continues to work” together with the communities and promote more actions of this kind, thinking about a better way of integrating immigrants on the island.

The training lasted 85 hours, and essentially aimed to provide immigrants with basic knowledge of cooking and pastry, providing them with skills to create kitchen and pastry products.

The action also included a module on entrepreneurship that will allow trainees to develop entrepreneurial skills for business management, allowing those who embark on this field to have appropriate tools.

However, before proceeding with the delivery of the certificates, which was attended by the Salense mayor Júlio Lopes, the local technician presented the data relating to the survey carried out during the year 2022 aiming to characterize the immigrants residing on the island of Sal.

The survey with the aim of drawing up a socio-demographic profile of foreigners and immigrants counted 2,296 foreign citizens residing on the island, which represents 21% of the total population of Sal, of which 1,617 (21.8%) were male and 679 ( 19.7%) female.

When talking about integration, 84.8% of these immigrants declared that they feel integrated on the island.
