Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde’s Ministry of Finance will carry out an inspection of the country’s Presidency of the Republic, following the controversy over the first lady’s salary and perks, it was announced today.
In a statement, the Cape Verdean Government said that the Minister of Finance and Business Development, Olavo Correia, as supervisor, ordered an inspection action to the Presidency of the Republic, focused on the “personnel expenses” items.
According to the same source, the action will cover the period between November 9, 2021, the date of the inauguration of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, and the present date, “with the aim of clarifying the legality and regularity of expenses with the people”.
“Under these terms, in the coming days, a team from the General Inspectorate of Finance (IGF) will be at the Presidency of the Republic to carry out the same”, concluded the note from the Government, supported by the Movement for Democracy (MpD).
The inspection comes after a controversy generated in the country over an alleged salary of 300 thousand escudos (2,720 euros) of the first lady, Débora Carvalho.
The Cape Verdean President had already requested a position from the Court of Auditors and the General Inspectorate of Finance on the matter, particularly on issues of legality, and announced that his partner’s benefits would be suspended.
José Maria Neves, former prime minister and elected with the support of the Cape Verde African Independence Party (PAICV, currently in opposition), also announced that, if it is understood that there will be any amount to replace, “it will be done immediately”.
