Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Teachers’ Union of the island of Santiago (Siprofis), Abraão Borges, said this Thursday, 4th, that the president of the National Assembly promised to take the teachers’ concerns to parliament and analyze the issue in committee.
The union leader was speaking to journalists at the end of a meeting he held with Austelino Correia, noting that the president of the National Assembly had asked for an understanding between the unions so that “with one voice” they could resolve disputes regarding salaries and career promotions.
According to the same source, representatives and teachers are currently analyzing the memorandum from the Ministry of Education, because, he stressed, “they will not sign” without first having the approval of teachers.
As the union leader explained, the memorandum proposes that professionals with a minimum of five years and a maximum of ten years are entitled to one promotion, over ten years will be entitled to two promotions and from 15 years onwards they will be able to enjoy three promotions over the years .
A proposal that deviates from the terms of the statute, he repudiated, since, he claimed, the law guarantees teachers promotion in service every four years.
Abraão Borges said that they will continue to defend the salary increase from 78,067 escudos to 107,471 escudos, but they will be able to negotiate the Government’s counterpart of 89,000 escudos base salary if the ministry “complies with promotion issues” as required by statute.
“Another point has to do with the transition list, from 8A to 9A. They are licensed teachers who do not have a pedagogical component who should be 9A, the statute says that five years later they will move to 9A and this has not been happening, now it will happen in the next few months”, he assured, adding that the list is already being worked on.
Abraão Borges said he believes the situation will be resolved this year, warning that the quality of teaching depends on the motivation of teachers and that when the teacher is poorly paid, teaching also suffers.
The president of the National Assembly also received the National Teachers’ Union (Sindep).
