Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Spanish canning company Atunlo, located on the island of São Vicente, will suspend contracts for more than 100 workers, for four months, within 21 days. There are more than 100 workers, with service provision contracts, who will be at home receiving half of their salaries for four months.
According to information provided today by Lusa, the coordinator of the General Industry, Food, Civil Construction and Services Union (Siacsa), Heidi Ganeto said that “on February 23rd, Antulo will suspend contracts for 120 days , due to lack of raw material”.
According to the union leader, in addition to the lack of raw materials, the company faces the “possibility of closing its doors in Cape Verde” due to the bad financial situation faced at the mother house in Spain.
“The company did not pay salaries for the month of January due to delays: they were supposed to transfer the amount from Spain, but they had to resolve the situation on the 9th”, he said.
This Thursday, Atunlo workers protested outside the company, after learning that they would receive their January salary late and in two installments.
Last month, the Frescomar cannery, also located on the island of São Vicente, laid off 200 workers, after service contracts ended, due to a lack of raw materials that were supplied by the Spanish company Atunlo.
Around 165 workers from this company are still waiting for an outcome to their employment situation.
“The situation at Frescomar, when it laid off 200 workers, resulted from the situation at Antulo, which supplied the tuna. Due to its situation, difficulties were created for that company”, explained Ganeto, noting that there is still no forecast for a return and that the The union does not have any information from the cannery.
Frescomar is a Cape Verdean and Spanish limited company dedicated to processing fish and marketing it, with Europe as its main market.
The Atunlo canning group, of Galician origin, announced in mid-December the start of a process of dismissal of around 80 people due to the closure of a factory in Santoña, Cantabria, for “productive and economic reasons”, according to the news agency EFE.
Lusa also reported that it tried to obtain clarification from both companies, but received no answers.
