Africa-Press – Cape verde. The municipality of Paul, Santo Antão, has a resident population of 5,766 people, according to the most recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), for the period 2023.
With 5,766 inhabitants, Paul represents 1.1% of the population of Cape Verde and 15.6% of the island of Santo Antão.
The population has a relatively young age structure: 21.8% are under 14 years old, 13.4% are in the 15-24 age group, 14.6% in the 25-34 age group, 40.4% in the 35-64 age group and 9.7% represent the population aged 65 or over.
In terms of age, 55.3% of the population is male and 44.7% is female.
In terms of employment, the unemployment rate in the municipality is 10.2%, but among young people (15-24 years old) unemployment reaches 24% and the employment rate for the population aged 15 and over is 47.8% (52.9% for men and 41.2% for women).
In terms of education, the literacy rate for the population aged 15 and over is 83.7%, with 88.4% for men and 77.7% for women.
Among the population aged 15-24, the literacy rate rises to 98.1%.
Only 9.2% of the population has no level of education, while 3% attended pre-school, 48.7% attended primary school, 39.4% attended secondary school and 8.9% attended secondary or higher education.
In terms of living conditions, 95.5% of the population uses electricity for lighting, 74.7% use gas to prepare food and 22% still use firewood.
The majority (89.5%) receive water from the public network, while 51.7% use a container for garbage collection. The percentage of homes with a bathroom is 85.3%.
A television is present in 75.6% of homes, and 42.7% also have pay TV. Only 38.5% of homes have an internet connection, while a landline telephone covers 15.9%.
Finally, the radio is still part of the daily lives of 44.8% of the population, and a computer is present in 6% of homes.
Regarding the average household size, Paul has 1,802 households, with the average size being 3.1 people.
The typology also reveals that 23.9% are single-person households, 21.3% are nuclear conjugal households, 13.2% are composite conjugal households, 15.1% are nuclear single-parent households, 12.5% are composite single-parent households and 6% are single couples.
On average, there are 2.3 people of working age (15-64) and 0.3 people aged 65 or over per household.
Activities related to the celebrations of Saint Anthony’s Day began in May with several activities, including the start of the route of the image of Saint Anthony through the various communities of Paul.
The scheduled activities also include a popular dance, horse racing, theatre, inaugurations, a drummer’s competition, a solemn session and a solemn mass.
