Africa-Press – Cape verde. The municipal firefighters of São Vicente received, on Saturday, from the Rotary Club of Mindelo a defibrillator that should help to provide a “better response” to pre-hospital emergencies, according to the councilor responsible for Civil Protection.
Anilton Andrade, who spoke to the press before the handover, held at the Adérito Sena Stadium, assured that the offer is of “extreme importance” for firefighters and the Municipal Civil Protection Service, because it will “improve the quality of service” in a island with an average of “more than three thousand” pre-hospital emergencies annually.
“This equipment, for victims of cardiorespiratory arrest, allows us to provide a better response. It is equipment that can help us in spaces where collective emergencies may arise”, considered the same source, thanking the gesture of the Rotary Club of Mindelo, which, according to the same source, has already offered the corporation an ambulance and other equipment.
This time this equipment was budgeted at around 150 contos, which joins another one in the hands of the firefighters and offered by another entity, according to the councilor.
Asked whether, taking into account the “reasonably affordable” price, it could not have been acquired by the city council itself, Anilton Andrade avoided delving into the matter further and justified that the city council currently operates on a twelfths basis.
However, he admitted the need for the equipment to save lives and especially in spaces such as sports venues, ports, airports and others with a large movement of people.
On the part of the Rotary Club of Mindelo, president Júlio Carlos Andrade said that they decided to help the firefighters once again with the aim of reaching more people in the community through this offer, achieved through a partnership with Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea (ASA).
The delivery, according to the same source, was postponed for a number of reasons, including the Covid-19 pandemic, but now it has been completed to assist with services associated, for example, with sport.
“We hope it never happens, but, if necessary, the equipment will already be delivered and ready to be used”, maintained Júlio Carlos Andrade, referring to the fact that the defibrillator, a device used in cases of cardiorespiratory arrest, is installed in the ambulance that is on standby at games at the Adérito Sena Stadium.
The Rotary Club of Mindelo, which has been in existence for around 28 years, has as one of its mottos “Giving of yourself, before thinking of yourself”, defended by members who work on a voluntary basis.
President Júlio Carlos Andrade assured that he has several activities on his agenda and is currently beginning to prepare for the new Rotary year, starting on July 1, 2024.
