Africa-Press – Cape verde. The island of Maio hosts this weekend, and for three days, the first activity commemorating the 500th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Santiago de Cape Verde.

Speaking to Inforpress, the representative of the organization of commemorative activities, Bernardino Gonçalves, assured that this meeting serves to present and prepare young people for the meeting that will take place next August on the island of Santiago.

Until then, preparatory work will be carried out in which 20,000 young people from all the islands are expected to be present.

“We want to count on the collaboration of as many young people as possible, since not everyone will be able to participate in the meeting in Santiago”, he said, adding that similar events will be held on other islands.

The first decentralized event celebrating the jubilee is counting on the participation of around 160 young people, some from the island of Santiago and the other from the island of Maio.

Bernardino Gonçalves stressed that the delegates nominated from each island will be present at the meeting on the island of Santiago, indicating that participation is open to anyone, as long as they bear the costs of their travel.

The activities commemorating the 500th anniversary, taking place in 2033, will serve to pass on testimony and knowledge to young people about the different aspects of the country’s history.

The young man from Mayan, Alcino Ramos Silva, welcomed this decentralized initiative, which, as he argued, is proving to be a moment of conviviality, sharing and coexistence between the young people of the two islands.

He said he was convinced that the people of May will give their contribution and suggestions in this event so that the jubilee would be a success, he said that he was hoping for a greater number of young people to participate, but admitted that the communication may not have been made in the right way. best form.

Yara Fereira, who is coordinator of the Youth Secretariat of the Diocese of Santiago, highlighted that this decentralized action aims to engage young people not only in religious issues but also in social and environmental aspects.

During today, young people carried out cleaning activities on Bixi Rotcha beach and planted fruit trees in the town of Morrinho, and on Sunday, the 17th, contacts are expected with the communities closest to the North Natural Park of the island.

The next meeting is scheduled for the island of Santo Antão.
