Africa-Press – Cape verde. The interim Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea, Manuela Roka Botey, presented the resignation of the Government en bloc at the request of the Ecuadorean President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, to reshape the Executive and make it “more effective”, according to official source.
“The promises made to the people are a possible failure, which makes it necessary to reshape the government to try to form a more effective one. That is why we call for the resignation of the prime minister and accept this resignation,” Obiang said, according to a press release released Friday night by the Press Office of that African country.
According to Obiang, who has ruled the country for 45 years, “the immeasure of enrichment, concealment and misuse of resources are the emphasis on the current situation of the Government.”
Equatorial Guinea is experiencing an “unprecedented economic crisis” and one of the reasons for this is the “lack of will” and the “excessive vices and abuses” of the current members of the Executive, according to the President.
“In the campaign for the last elections, promises have been made to the people that have not been fulfilled so far. There are imminent challenges, theories and preaching that do not lead to favorable results and are not enough to solve the administrative actions expected of each department.”
Regarding the financial situation of Equatorial Guinea, Obiang warned that he will take “drastic measures to solve the possible collapse of the economy”.
“The reserves are sold out,” he said.
For his part, Roka Botey justified the dismissal of his entire team with “the great economic challenges that the world in general faces” and Equatorial Guinea in particular.
He also reiterated his “unwavering adhesion” to Obiang, “to his person, to his political line and to the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea.”
“We pledge to remain always linked and available to the orders of its excellence in order to continue to collaborate and contribute to the great task of building and better develop our country, Equatorial Guinea,” said the prime minister and administration coordinator.
Roka Botey is the first woman to hold this position, having been appointed on 31 January 2023.
After the firing of the bloc, the 81 members of the government (28 ministers and ministers, 10 deputy ministers, 20 deputy ministers and 23 secretaries of state) are now in office.
Obiang thanked all of them for the “services provided” and recommended that those who are not part of the next government seek other occupations, “such as agriculture, the creation of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the industrialization of their respective companies.”
The Ecuadorian vice president, Teodorín Nguema Obiang, also informed in social network X the dissolution of the Government after the Council of Ministers held this Friday at the People’s Palace in Malabo.
“This decision responds to the need to revitalize the management of the country’s public affairs,” he said.
Since its independence from Spain in 1968, Equatorial Guinea has been considered by human rights organizations as one of the most corrupt and repressive countries in the world.
Teodoro Obiang Nguema, 82, has ruled the country with “iron hand” since 1979, when he overthrew his uncle Francisco Macías in a coup d’état, being the longest-in-hand in power in the world.
