Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Bishop of the Diocese of Santiago, Dom Arlindo Furtado, said today, in reaction to the death of Pope Francis, that he will be remembered as “one of the great reformers” of the Catholic Church, and that he played an essential role in the mission of preparing the Church for its testimony in the current world, with all its demands.
In an interview with RCV, Dom Arlindo considered the death of Pope Francis to be a great loss for the Church, but stressed that his legacy is “unforgettable and impactful for the reform” initiated during his pontificate.
“He is one of the great men we have had to lead the Church in recent times. It is a great loss for the Church, but he leaves an unforgettable and impactful legacy for the reform and the role of the Church in the world,” he said, adding that this moment represents “great pain,” he declared.
Speaking to public radio, Dom Arlindo Furtado pointed out that Pope Francis, after John XXIII, who called the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, had the role of preparing the Church for its mission and “its testimony in today’s world, the modern world, with its complexities and demands, injustices and disparities and contradictions”.
Regarding the procedures to be followed after the Pope’s death, Dom Arlindo explained that there is an entire Vatican structure that monitors this situation, emphasizing that “everything is planned, everything is organized”, and that the Camerlengo — the cardinal who presides over the Apostolic Chamber — assumes, from now on, the management of the Church, while awaiting the Vatican’s guidelines.
Dom Arlindo also said he was not surprised by the news, given the Pope’s fragile health in recent times.
