São Nicolau: Ribeira Brava hosts the first reading marathon of the novel “Chiquinho”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The city of Ribeira Brava, São Nicolau, hosted on Saturday the first reading marathon of the novel “Chiquinho”, by Baltasar Lopes da Silva, promoted by Carlos Almeida, co-translator of the work into English, and José Cabral, continuer of the work.

Speaking to the press, one of the initiative’s mentors, Carlos Almeida, said that the event is inspired by the “Moby Dick” reading marathons held at the New Bedford Whale Museum in the United States, with the intention of replicating the idea in Cape Verde with a reading marathon of the classic Cape Verdean novel “Chiquinho”.

According to him, the marathon is also a tribute to the writer, philologist and lawyer, Baltasar Lopes da Silva, and as part of the celebrations of Cape Verdean Teacher’s Day, celebrated on April 23.

Carlos Almeida also highlighted that the event’s primary objective was to encourage reading, especially among younger people, which is why he showed “such joy and contentment” with the strong participation of the Baltazar Lopes State School in the reading marathon.

“Also, let’s say that this initiative is a way of keeping alive this memory of Baltasar Lopes da Silva, written on the theme of Chiquinho, because as Germano Almeida said in an interview, we all need to read Chiquinho, because Chiquinho is the best work that expresses the history of Cape Verde”, he added.

The initiative was attended by the ambassador of the United States of America (USA) in Cape Verde, Jennifer Adams, who highlighted the relevance of the event as well as the connection between this marathon and Chiquinho’s romance with the United States of America.

The first reading marathon of the novel “Chiquinho” lasted more than six hours and had a “strong participation” of students from Colégio Estadual Baltazar Lopes, who also praised the initiative which, according to them, allowed them to get to know and read the novel better.
