Africa-Press – Cape verde. For Nuías Silva, Mayor of São Filipe, the Cape Verdean diaspora deserves to be more valued and, fifty years after independence, it is necessary to reflect in depth on its contribution to the development of Cape Verde.
The statements were made during a networking meeting with immigrants and businesspeople, held on the evening of Monday, April 28. The mayor highlighted the “growing importance” of the Cape Verdean community abroad, describing it as a “pillar of national progress”.
For the Mayor of São Filipe, Cape Verde’s progress is the result of this intense relationship between those who live in the country and those who live abroad.
“Five decades after independence, it is time to reflect deeply on the contribution of the diaspora to the development of Cape Verde in various dimensions and to plan for the next 50 years of this partnership”, he stressed.
Nuías Silva warns that the diaspora cannot continue to be seen only in numerical terms, but rather as a “strategic asset” to be included in public policies, as it constitutes a “critical factor for development”.
At the same meeting, the mayor announced the project for the construction of an urban shopping centre, which should be inaugurated before the end of the current term.
“It is a modern and ambitious project, already designed, which will be presented by the end of the year with the respective financing plan”, he reveals.
The new shopping centre should include at least 50 shops, restaurants, children’s leisure areas and parking areas.
According to the mayor, the infrastructure aims to position the island of Fogo as a regional business capital, creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs, micro-entrepreneurs and members of the diaspora who want to invest or establish themselves in São Filipe.
“We have seen a growing demand for commercial spaces, and this project responds to this need”, he explains.
