Africa-Press – Cape verde. The fight against gender-based violence gains new momentum in São Vicente. Under the motto “Korda Kab Verde! Maxist violence is killing!”, an awareness campaign is launched today to combat this social scourge, with a special focus on the fishing communities of Mindelo, Calhau and São Pedro.
The initiative is part of the project “Promoting a more inclusive and sustainable integral fishing chain that promotes access to the rights of women and young people in São Vicente”, also known as Amdjer d’txeu luta, financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
The campaign is implemented by the Mindelo Fishmongers Association in partnership with the NGO Peace and Development. In an interview with Rádio Morabeza, Diandra Monteiro, from the Amdjer d’txeu luta project, explains the objective of the initiative.
“The awareness campaign is aimed at the artisanal fishing population, to prevent and combat gender-based violence, with a focus on the fishing communities of Calhau, São Pedro and also the city of Mindelo, specifically in the fish market area, and not only, it is for the entire civil society. Gender-based violence is a problem that is already part of Cape Verdean culture. But it cannot be like this,” she says.
The campaign seeks to educate the public about the various types of violence, including psychological and symbolic forms, promote a culture of peace, and combat stigmas and preconceived ideas.
“People associate GBV with physical violence, but we have other types of violence, such as financial violence, when your partner wants to control your money. We also have psychological violence – an example is when a woman doesn’t want to have children, doesn’t want to be a housewife, and her partner commits psychological violence. And that’s the idea behind “Korda Kab Verde! “Military violence is killing us!” It is to inform the community about concrete resources and how they can report it. GBV is a public crime, and not only can we report it, but we should,” he says.
The campaign’s objective is to inform, educate and mobilize society to prevent and report cases of gender-based violence.
