Africa-Press – Cape verde. On the 31st of this month, Maio Island will host the main activities of World No Tobacco Day, with awareness-raising actions focused on the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
According to the Ministry of Health’s focal point for tobacco control, Celestino Lobo, the choice of Maio is part of the policy of decentralization and rapprochement with communities, allowing information and prevention to be brought to all the country’s islands.
“We chose May to give greater centrality to the island. Our presence here is a clear demonstration that the Ministry of Health is committed to informing the entire population of Cape Verde. Wherever it is, we have to be present to encourage good practices, healthy choices and strengthen prevention from the periphery,” he said.
This year, the activities take place under the motto “Unmasking the Tobacco Industry”, with the aim of raising awareness of the strategies used by the industry to attract consumers, especially younger ones, by disguising the harmful impacts of the product.
The program includes the participation of the Minister of Health, Jorge Figueiredo, representatives of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), sports and cultural associations on the island, students and the community in general, with initiatives that combine sport, culture and information.
Celestino Lobo is already on the ground organizing awareness-raising sessions with the population, schools and local organizations, as part of the preparation of the activities.
World No Tobacco Day is celebrated annually on May 31st and aims to raise awareness in society about the dangers of smoking, promote public tobacco control policies and defend the right to health and well-being.
