Africa-Press – Cape verde. More than three hundred people will benefit from free oral health consultations in the municipality of Ribeira, an initiative that aims to fill the shortage of professionals in this field and provide essential care to the population.
The mission, from the North American organization “Cape Verdean Women United,” comprised of 13 dentists, arrived on the island of São Nicolau through a partnership with the Ribeira Brava Health Department and the City Council.
The mission, which covers three intense days of consultations, aims to benefit more than 300 people with dental evaluations, cleanings, and extractions.
Elvio Pereira, Ribeira Brava Health Department, emphasized the importance of this initiative, especially since São Nicolau faces a shortage of oral health technicians.
“The mission is extremely important, knowing that a large part of the health problems we have are related to oral health issues, but this mission also allows people to have this service here in São Nicolau, minimizing costs,” he stated.
Elvio Pereira also emphasized that the police station’s priority is to “bring different service missions to São Nicolau,” whether through national or international teams, focusing not only on providing care but also on training and exchanging knowledge with local professionals.
Paula Pina, coordinator of the comitiba, said that the mission aims to serve approximately 100 people per day during their three-day stay on the island, focusing primarily on tooth extractions and deep cleanings.
According to her, in addition to the most common procedures, the mission also focuses on oral health education, teaching children how to brush their teeth properly and the importance of hygiene. She emphasized that all patients receive a complete oral hygiene kit containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.
The coordinator also stated that this is the organization’s first mission to São Nicolau Island, despite having already been to several islands in the country. She emphasized that despite transportation issues that hampered the team’s arrival, work is proceeding normally and with “high demand.”
Based in Brockton, United States, the non-profit organization aims to empower Cape Verdean families and promote the development of healthier, more resilient communities.
