Africa-Press – Cape verde. Approximately 200 national and international participants are expected in Cape Verde for the fourth Ocean Decade Conference, taking place in October. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between governments, scientists, and communities on the sustainable use of the oceans.
The program includes activities on the islands of Fogo and Brava, under the motto “uniting knowledge, protecting the seas: ocean science for all,” President José Maria Neves announced this Tuesday, with official sessions taking place on October 10th and 11th.
According to the head of state, the goal is to strengthen partnerships around knowledge and the sustainable use of the oceans.
The meeting also aims to emphasize the importance of international cooperation and recognize the contribution of small island developing states, such as Cape Verde, to the global agenda for the preservation and sustainable development of the oceans, in addition to raising awareness among the Cape Verdean diaspora about the responsible use of marine resources.
Approximately 200 participants are expected, including speakers from the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), other countries in Africa, Europe, and island states such as Seychelles and São Tomé and Príncipe, as well as Ministers of Environment and Fisheries from the CPLP and Senegal, academics, scientific researchers, community leaders, and members of the Cape Verdean government.
The conference will have three main moments: preparatory events, from October 2nd to 9th, with roundtables and practical meetings; official sessions on the 10th and 11th, with five thematic panels, including the presentation of results from scientific expeditions conducted in Cape Verde in 2025; and the closing ceremony in Chã das Caldeiras, Fogo, with cultural and environmental activities.
The initiative follows the third conference held on Sal Island in June 2024, succeeding the previous editions held in Praia (2022) and São Vicente (2023).
