Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Dretu Foundation, in partnership with the Benfica Foundation of Portugal, is developing a multidisciplinary project that aims to promote inclusion, education, and health to transform the reality of young people in Achada Santo António.
The project was discussed today during a joint seminar held by First Lady Débora Carvalho, as president of the Dretu Foundation, and was attended by the Benfica Foundation, experts, and social partners.
The event followed a visit to this neighborhood in Praia, specifically to schools and community associations. The First Lady explained that the objective was to jointly analyze the challenges, to see what has already been done and where they could add value to the community.
“The focus will be on education. We will use sports and technical or professional training to support both girls and boys who are not finding the education system attractive but can return to the academic world,” she stated.
According to Débora Carvalho, the Achada de Santo António neighborhood was chosen for the initial implementation of the project due to the social challenges it faces, such as deviant behavior among children, adolescents, and young adults.
“And it’s a very interesting neighborhood to work with because we have the presence of important embassies, the Central Bank, and the National Assembly, but at the same time, we see signs of behavioral concerns in the neighborhood,” she argued.
According to the Dretu Foundation, the idea is to implement the intervention model initially in Achada de Santo António and subsequently expand the initiative to other neighborhoods, taking into account the particularities of each community.
With this, they hope Achada de Santo António will become an example of reconciliation and opportunity, rather than a neighborhood marked by violence.
