Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Santa Catarina de Santiago City Hall celebrated International Mental Health Day today with an event designed to raise awareness about psychological well-being and reaffirm its commitment to supporting and treating those with mental illness.
In a press interview, Áurea Fernandes, Secretary of Health, Equality, Gender, and Family Protection, highlighted the city council’s commitment to supporting residents facing mental and emotional challenges, highlighting the daily work at Casa da Sopa, which houses approximately 60 mentally ill, elderly, and vulnerable individuals.
“We have nurses, psychologists, and consultations in partnership with the Health Department, in addition to the support of the Psychosocial Support Center (CAP), which supports the treatment of mental illness,” she said, emphasizing that the center offers not only food and hygiene services, but also recreational activities and psychological counseling.
Áurea Fernandes also revealed that the municipality is developing a project to create a physical space for the hospitalization of patients with mental disorders, as part of a broader strategy for continued and humanized care.
In turn, João Carvalho, coordinator of the Santa Catarina Public Health Department, reinforced the Health Department’s commitment to continue working in partnership with the city government and other local entities to support people with mental illness and vulnerable elderly people.
“Our greatest concern continues to be the care of homeless patients, who require constant monitoring and improved hygiene and well-being conditions,” she emphasized.
Gilvanete da Luz, a psychologist at the CAP, highlighted the priority of bringing mental health services to all individuals and communities, advocating for the expansion of these initiatives to other municipalities across the country.
The initiative brought together health professionals, institutional partners, and community members for a moment of reflection and sharing experiences on the importance of mental health and combating the stigma associated with mental illness.
