Africa-Press – Cape verde. Luís Cardoso, the head of the Democratic Unitary Coalition (CDU) ticket, of Cape Verdean origin, secured re-election as a councilor on the Odemira City Council in Sunday’s municipal elections in Portugal.
In a statement to Inforpress, Luís Cardoso, who arrived in Odemira in 1994 at the age of 20 and is now 54, lamented the fact that the left-wing coalition, formed by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and the Green Ecologist Party (PEV), which had two councilors in 2021, only managed to win one term.
“(…) I was elected councilor, but the prospects are not good due to the composition of the executive branch. I certainly accept the defeat; the result was bad since we lost one elected official, but our commitment to the people of Odemira remains unwavering,” said the municipal employee and current councilor without portfolios for the CDU.
Also representing the CDU, Cape Verdean Jakilson Pereira, a native of São Salvador do Mundo (Santiago), was re-elected to the Parish Council of Águas Livres, but was not elected to the Municipal Assembly of Amadora.
For the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Portuguese-Cape Verdean José Manuel Moreno ran for the Assembly of the Union of Parishes of Massamá and Monte Abraão, in the municipality of Sintra, which was won by the Socialist Party (PS).
Although results are still pending, the construction businessman and writer, who arrived in Portugal in the 1980s and is not expected to be elected, welcomed the PSD’s victory in the Sintra City Council, where many Cape Verdeans live.
Many Cape Verdeans with nationality ran in these elections, and others with residency and awaiting nationality were on the lists of various parties, but most were in ineligible positions.
