São Nicolau Health CV Project Donates Hospital Supplies

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal de São Nicolau health departments received a donation of hospital supplies this Friday from the Health CV Project, an initiative that continues the medical mission carried out on the island last year.

In a statement to the press, Ribeira Brava Health Chief Élvio Pereira announced that the donation includes a “large quantity” of medical equipment and consumables, such as gowns, gloves, masks, hospital beds, wheelchairs, crutches, thermometers, and stethoscopes.

According to him, the materials arrived on the island a few months ago, but the collection process was delayed due to administrative issues and customs fees. This setback was overcome with support from the Ministry of Health, which paid approximately R$200,000 to release the equipment.

“It’s a 20-foot container full of materials. We’re still in the organization and materials phase, which will benefit the island’s health facilities, but some materials, such as diapers and general supplies, can be distributed to institutions that carry out social work,” he added.

Élvio Pereira also addressed the situation of replacing a doctor transferred in September, stating that a new doctor was supposed to arrive but “unfortunately didn’t show up,” a situation that was reported to the central institutions, which are already in the process of hiring a new doctor.

“The Ministry of Health has already contacted a new doctor to be placed in Ribeira Brava. The contract signing process is underway, and we hope the replacement will happen as soon as possible,” he said.

Currently, the service has only two doctors, which has increased wait times for appointments. According to Pereira, the situation has forced doctors to “work hard to meet all the demand,” and he appealed for the public’s understanding.
