Africa-Press – Cape verde. Starting Saturday, Maio Island will have 10 certified lifeguards, following training provided by the Maritime and Port Institute (IMP), aimed at ensuring the availability of qualified professionals on the island.
In an interview with Inforpress, IMP delegate in Maio, Deisy Lima, explained that the training was intended to “improve skills and prepare new lifeguards, ensuring the island has a reserve of professionals ready to intervene whenever necessary.”
She emphasized that Maio has seen “a progressive increase in visitors and tourists,” which reinforces the need to maintain a local structure prepared to ensure safety on the most popular beaches.
According to Deisy Lima, the IMP, in collaboration with the city government, monitors the beaches during the summer season, paying special attention to the busiest areas, namely Ponta Preta, Beach Rocha, and Baxona.
“The training is not intended to immediately increase the presence of lifeguards on the beaches, but to ensure that, when necessary, there are certified professionals available on the island,” he emphasized.
With this initiative, the IMP aims to strengthen local response capacity in aquatic emergencies and consolidate a culture of maritime safety on Maio Island.
