Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean Olympic Academy is holding a forum today in Praia on the impact of the School Games and Olympic education on the civic development of young people, highlighting the role of school sports in building active citizenship.

In statements to Inforpress, the president of the Cape Verdean Olympic Academy, Orlando Mascarenhas, stated that this year’s forum focuses on Olympic education in schools, reinforcing the mission of disseminating the values of Olympism among students and teachers.

“We are here precisely to transmit and promote Olympic values, such as friendship, respect, solidarity, fair play and excellence. The fundamental objective is for young people to understand that sport is not just competition, but an instrument for integral formation and civic development,” he emphasized.

When questioned about the main challenges to transforming the School Games into an effective pedagogical tool, the official stressed that the path is still demanding and depends on collective commitment.

“The task is immense. There are many difficulties and contradictions within the school context, but we believe in the power of sport to mobilize and unite. Just look at the recent impact of the Blue Sharks’ qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which thrilled and united the country and the diaspora around a common goal,” he emphasized.

Orlando Mascarenhas also guaranteed that the Olympic Academy intends to continue promoting similar initiatives, ensuring the continuity of the debate and the implementation of Olympic education strategies.

“It’s our job. We will remain steadfast in promoting sport and Olympic values, especially among young people in schools,” he concluded.

The forum aims to continuously promote dialogue on the importance of Olympic values in the school context and their contribution to the personal, social, and civic development of young Cape Verdeans.

Throughout the day, there will be panel discussions and sharing of experiences and projects from different educational and sporting backgrounds, addressing topics such as the role of School Games in values formation, the integration of Olympic education in schools, and the contribution of sport to building active citizenship.
