São Filipe Council Signs Protocol for Building Rehab

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government, through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Spatial Planning and Housing (MIOTH), the Ministry of Tourism and Transport, and the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, signed a cooperation protocol with the São Filipe Municipal Council, aimed at the rehabilitation and restoration of derelict buildings, in the context of the damage caused by the recent rains.

According to the government, the protocol aims to enhance the value of historical and architectural heritage, promote urban revitalization and reduce building degradation, as well as generate local jobs and professional training, attract public and private investment, and improve the quality of life and urban safety.

The initiative, according to the same source, is part of ongoing government commitments, with secured funding and planned interventions in strategic areas for territorial development.

“Given the scale of the problem of vacant buildings, in a context where the government has decided to reinforce support for housing rehabilitation for the most disadvantaged populations, a structured public intervention is necessary within the framework of housing policies, specifically through the Requalification, Rehabilitation and Accessibility Program (PRRA),” it states.

For the government, this approach prioritizes the promotion of urban regeneration and the rehabilitation of historical heritage, in close coordination with the Municipal Councils.
