Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Secretary-General of the PAICV reacted this Wednesday in Boa Vista to criticisms from the MpD, reaffirming the party’s commitment to the institutions of the Republic and denouncing what he described as a “scenario of social and economic regression” in Cape Verde.
In a press conference, Vladmir Silves Ferreira defended the president of the PAICV and mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, after the MpD accused the mayor of leading “an attack on justice.” The leader guaranteed that the PAICV and its president maintain “a firm commitment to democratic values, rights and fundamental guarantees.”
Vladmir Silves Ferreira focused his intervention on the socio-economic situation of the country, stating that, after almost a decade of MpD government, “the signs of decline are evident,” especially in the peripheral islands. He pointed to the scarcity of essential goods on islands such as Brava, Fogo, São Nicolau, and Maio, as well as the frequent cancellations of air and sea connections, including in Boa Vista, as factors that reinforce the “feeling of insularity and abandonment.”
Regarding justice, a central theme of the MpD’s criticisms, the PAICV’s secretary-general advocated for a constitutional and legal reform that ensures the “effective independence” of judicial and regulatory bodies, free from political interference.
When questioned about the choice of Boa Vista for the conference, he explained that the need to react to the MpD’s statements and monitor local infrastructure and transportation problems justified the initiative.
The PAICV’s reaction comes after statements by the MpD’s secretary-general, Agostinho Lopes, who accused Francisco Carvalho of trying to obstruct judicial searches at the Praia City Hall.
