Africa-Press – Cape verde. UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday identified the United States and China as the two poles that aspire to divide the world into rival spheres of influence in the future.
Moments earlier, Guterres, who gave his first press conference of the year in New York on Thursday, had warned that global problems will not be solved by “a single power dictating the rules,” later clarifying that he was referring to Washington.
“At the present moment, it is evident that the most powerful country in the world is the United States,” Guterres stated, after being questioned about which country he was referring to when he said, in his initial remarks at the press conference, that “global problems will not be solved by a single power dictating the rules, nor will they be solved by two powers dividing the world into rival spheres of influence.”
“And, obviously, we see, and many see, regarding the future, the idea that there are two poles, one centered on the US and the other on China. That was the second point I made,” he added at the press conference, which was covered by the Lusa news agency.
Guterres defended the need to support multipolarity, “if we want a stable world, where peace can be sustained, where development can be widespread and where, in the end, values prevail.”
“We need to support a dense relationship, a set of relationships between different countries,” he further urged.
