Rethinking Hospital Construction in Porto Novo

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The PAICV (opposition) MPs elected for Santo Antão defended on Sunday the need to “rethink the construction of a hospital” in the municipality of Porto Novo, “where there is no shortage of space”.

The MPs’ spokesperson, Rosa Rocha, speaking to the press at the end of a visit to the electoral district, said that there is a need to rethink the health structures in Santo Antão and Porto Novo, which, due to its central location, is the only growing hub, as well as being the entry and exit point for this island.

In her view, both the Santo Antão regional hospital, which has been operating for 30 years, and the Porto Novo health post, built 25 years ago, have “archaic and outdated structures that do not meet current demands or future challenges”.

“We have to prepare for the future, we have to rethink the construction of a hospital in Porto Novo, where there is no shortage of space,” stressed the MP, for whom Santo Antão suffers from “structural problems” in terms of health.

Regarding the health post in Porto Novo, the deputy warned about the advanced state of disrepair of the building, with serious operational problems and inadequate working conditions for the professionals.

Rosa Rocha explained that Porto Novo, being the gateway to and from Santo Antão, must have a health structure capable of serving both the resident population and the thousands of tourists who need it; therefore, this municipality deserves a hospital.

For the PAICV parliamentarians, the health sector is being politicized, generating “serious problems at the central, regional, and local levels.”

“It is unacceptable that a director of the Santo Antão Health Region has a background in nursing and has been a councilor in Porto Novo. We need qualified people with experience in this area to address the problems,” observed Rosa Rocha.

The deputy also recalled that Porto Novo has been without a health secretary since June of last year, as the Ministry of Health “has not yet found someone trustworthy” for the position, also warning about problems with the laboratory and equipment.
