Africa-Press – Cape verde. Women’s participation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Cape Verde has seen “exponential growth,” a result of initiatives encouraging women to enter the field, the co-founder of SheTech revealed today.
According to Ruana Miranda, projects such as SheTech and Women in Tech have been instrumental in sparking the interest of young women in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
“Sparking curiosity is our greatest mission,” she said, explaining that one of the primary barriers is not a lack of interest, but rather a lack of awareness regarding the opportunities available.
Ruana Miranda affirmed that the team has been working in partnership with schools, conducting awareness-raising activities and engaging directly with female students.
According to the official, a mentorship session dedicated to girls and young women—held today as part of the sixth edition of the Cape Verde Internet Governance Forum (IGF-CV), organized by ARME—involved 30 students.
The aim is to foster critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy, skills considered essential.
Despite these advancements, Ruana Miranda acknowledged that significant gender inequality persists within the sector, noting that in Africa, data indicates that only about 20 percent of ICT professionals are women.
According to the co-founder, SheTech—which marks its one-year anniversary in June—has been creating spaces regarded as safe and welcoming for women of various ages and experience levels to share their experiences.
Currently, the initiative comprises a group of approximately 90 participants—ranging from teenagers to women with careers spanning over 20 years—and has organized workshops, open discussions, and training sessions.
Among the activities already completed, she highlighted a training program for approximately 20 women conducted in the Eugénio Lima district of Praia.
