Mpd Presents Candidates in Boa Vista for Renewal Rigor

Africa-Press – Cape verde. On Friday, the 24th, the MpD unveiled its candidates for parliamentary deputy representing Boa Vista in the legislative elections scheduled for May 17. The list is headed by Marcos Mendes, who pledged to serve as a voice of “insistence” in defending the island’s interests.

The event, held at the Boa Vista State High School, was presided over by Carlos Monteiro, a national leader of the Movement for Democracy (MpD). Monteiro highlighted the “positive energy” and technical competence of the Boa Vista ticket, which is composed primarily of young people with deep roots in the local community.

During his address, Carlos Monteiro reviewed the MpD’s record of governance, emphasizing that the administration led by Ulisses Correia e Silva successfully managed international crises—such as the pandemic and the fallout from global conflicts—while protecting family incomes through subsidies for essential goods.

Monteiro further asserted that Cabo Verde currently stands as a benchmark for good governance at both the African and global levels. He argued that this status grants the party the “necessary credibility” to continue guiding the destiny of both the nation and the island of Boa Vista.

For his part, the lead candidate, Marcos Mendes, focused his speech on local commitment. He argued that his role in parliament would be to serve as a spokesperson for the demands of Boa Vista’s residents, acknowledging that—despite “significant investments” already made on the island—there remain promises that residents wish to see fulfilled.

“We are not here to defend the party; we are here to defend ‘Bubista’ [Boa Vista],” the candidate declared. He added that “it is never too late for a fresh start, never too late to rectify shortcomings, and never too late to ensure the continuity of ongoing projects”—goals he asserted were achievable with his team, which possesses an intimate understanding of the “local terrain” and the daily struggles faced by the population.

Marcos Mendes acknowledged the investments the Government has made on the island, as well as the projects currently underway—specifically, the expansion and lighting of the airport runway, the construction of 50 affordable housing units, and urban redevelopment and access road construction works. However, the candidate emphasized that it is necessary to “demand more action” regarding areas such as water supply, support for fishing and agriculture, and the protection of the elderly and female heads of households.

Both Carlos Monteiro and Marcos Mendes highlighted the “seriousness” of the current government in contrast to the stance of the opposition, asserting that the country cannot be handed over to those who confine themselves to the digital sphere, and arguing that “anyone who has never managed a city will never manage a country.”

The MpD list for the Boa Vista constituency also includes names such as David Francês, Bernardete Cardoso, Nilton Tavares, and Zuleica Pires.

The party is now calling for the full mobilization of its local organization for the election scheduled for May 17.
