Sal Island: Biodiversity Project places more than 3.000 turtle nests in nursery

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Biodiversity Project placed more than 3.000 turtle nests in a nursery last year, and also counted in the same year a record number of sows, totaling more than 53.000 turtle nests.

This information was shared this Thursday by the director of the Biodiversity Project Association, in Sal, Albert Taxonera, during a forum for the presentation of the results of environmental conservation in Sal Island in 2021.

He explained that these nests, which represent only six percent of all nests in Sal Island, a very small proportion were placed in more than six turtle nursery created on the island last season, where more than 151.000 turtles were released into the sea.

“This means that 70.3 percent of the nests had a good development of the turtles, which were eventually routed to the sea,” said Albert Taxonera, stressing the importance of ensuring the entry of turtles into the sea, to keep the population of the species in the future, although one turtle in every thousand will survive.
