Africa-Press – Cape verde. “Literary/Scientific Award Dr. Henrique Teixeira de Sousa” is the new literary contest launched this week by the Municipality of São Filipe as part of the celebrations of the centenary of the elevation of São Filipe to the category of city, which will take place on the 12th of July. The launch of this new contest coincided with the announcement of the winner of the 1st edition of the “Prémio Literário Pedro Cardoso”, also from the São Filipe municipality, the Monastery Lourenço Gomes de Pina with his work “Festa tradisional na roda de burkan”.
Unlike the Pedro Cardoso award, created last year to honor works written in Creole from Ilha do Vulcão, the Dr. Henrique Teixeira de Sousa is not required to be Cape Verdean Creole, so it can be presented in Portuguese, one of the criteria being its originality and being unpublished. The winner is entitled to a prize of 200,000 Cape Verdean escudos (200 contos).
Applications open from Thursday, July 7th
To compete for the prize, interested parties must register via email or at the counters of the Municipality of São Filipe. The organization informs that “works sent by post will not be accepted”.
Entries started last Thursday, 7th, and will run until the 6th of November, and the winner will be known at the end of the year.
Pedro Cardoso Award Winner
The announcement of this new literature competition took place on Thursday, 7th, at the premises of Casa das Bandeiras, the day on which the winner of the first edition of the “ Pedro Cardoso Literary Prize” was announced.
The work “Festa tradisional na roda de burkan” by Lourenço Gomes de Pina was chosen by the jury formed by Filinto Silva (writer), Almeida Louro (teacher) and Manuel da Luz Gonçalves (teacher/writer).
Chosen from a total of six works, of which one was disqualified for having been previously published, “Festa tradisional na roda de burkan” received from the jury a total of 249 points, with the justification that it “fulfilled all the requirements to win the first place”.
For the achievement, Lourenço Gomes de Pina will receive a monetary prize of 200 thousand escudos, but the mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, indicated that the city council will mobilize partnerships to try to edit all the competing works, hoping that for the next edition it can count on more works.
New prizes on the way
In an interview quoted by Inforpress, the mayor of São Filipe Nuías Silva said that the City Council intends to launch other awards in the coming years, namely youth and school-level awards.
