The project “Oncologia Cabo Verde”, from the Gulbenkian Foundation, which works with health care in the field of oncology, received a “very positive” evaluation from the Portuguese consultancy Logframe. The evaluation considered the improvement of the diagnostic capacity and the increase in the number and type of surgeries.

The project, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, has been taking place since 2018 at the Agostinho Neto Hospitals, in Praia, and Baptista de Sousa, in Mindelo.

“This evaluation, whose results are considered very positive, shows an 80% increase in oncological surgeries and 18% in chemotherapy sessions, as well as a 30% decrease in the number of evacuations of patients to Portugal, between 2017 and 2020” , says the foundation, in a note sent to this editor. These results, according to the same source, also contributed to a 3% decrease in the cancer mortality rate between 2018 and 2020, with the Coordinator of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Oncological Diseases, Carla Barbosa, highlighting their impact on improved diagnosis in breast and prostate cancer.

The evaluation also focused on the effect of some measures on the future of this area, namely the creation of an oncological registry at the Agostinho Neto hospital, which is intended to have a national scope.

Changes are also expected in the area of ​​training, which can benefit from the digital world, whose adaptation was accelerated by the covid-19 pandemic.

The evaluation points to the “need to expand, consolidate and deepen the interventions already initiated, with the aim of continuing to improve cancer care in Cape Verde.
